چکیده

Total L X-ray fluorescence cross-sections have been measured for the elements La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb and Lu using a photon energy of 15.2 keV. The measurements have been performed using an annular source of Am. The obtained cross-sections were then compared with the theoretical values evaluated using semi-empirically fitted values of L-subshell fluorescence yields and Coster–Kronig transition probabilities based on relativistic Dirac–Hartree–Slater theory. Good agreement was observed between the experimental and theoretical values. Relative intensities ILb=ILa and ILg=ILa have been also measured for the same elements. The accuracy of the measurements varies up to 6% (except for the Lg Xray line around 8%). r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. PACS: 32.30.Rj; 78.70 En

Effects of particle size and weight percentage of heavy metal elements on photon shielding efficiency of reinforced polymer composites

Background: Polymer composites when reinforced with heavy metals in the form of micro/nano particles are efficient gamma- and X-ray shielding materials providing such advantageous features as cost-effectiveness, light-weight factor, flexibility, non-toxicity, conformability over conventional shields. Materials and Methods: In this paper the influence of weight percentages and particle sizes of ...

Interphase Death of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells Exposed to Accelerated Heavy Ions

Introduction: Heavy ions are nucleus of elements of iron, argon, carbon and neon that all carry positive electrical charges. For these particles to be useful in radiotherapy they need to accelerated to high energy by more than thousand mega volts. Also the cosmic environment is considered to be a complicated mixture of highly energetic photons and heavy ions such as iron. Therefore, the health ...

Measurements of absolute K-shell ionization cross sections and L-shell x-ray production cross sections of Ge by electron impact

Results from measurements of absolute K-shell ionization cross sections and La x-ray production cross sections of Ge by impact of electrons with kinetic energies ranging from the ionization threshold up to 40 keV are presented. The cross sections were obtained by measuring Ka and La x-ray intensities emitted from ultrathin Ge films deposited onto self-supporting carbon backing films. Recorded x...

Assessment of X-Ray Crosstalk in a Computed Tomography Scanner with Small Detector Elements Using Monte Carlo Method

Introduction: Crosstalk is a leakage of X-ray or light produced in a matrix of X-ray detectors or array of photodiodes in one element to other elements affecting on image contrast and spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed X-ray crosstalk in a computed tomography (CT) scanner with small detector elements to estimate the effect of various parameters such as X-ray tube voltage, detector e...

Shielding simulations for safe use of curtain electron accelerator by MCNP4C

In an electron curtain accelerator, when the electron beam passes through the titanium exit window of the accelerator chamber, X-ray photons are produced as a negative by-product of retarding accelerated electrons. Controlling the produced X-ray photons to avoid their detrimental effects or in fact, proper shielding of the accelerator is an important issue that has to be considered in the use o...
